Designed with outdoor enthusiasts in mind, Crosscall’s Action-X5 phone is meant to replace an action camera, with its 120º wide angle lens, stabilized image, IP68 waterproof rating, and a 3850 mAh battery that lasts longer than any other. The device is supported by a whole ecosystem, both hardware and software, so users can best leverage all its technological capabilities.

To round out this ecosystem, the company wanted to add quick and intuitive video editing so customers could share their experiences on the go. With no pre-existing, readily available software that could meet its needs, Crosscall turned to Spiria to help it develop a custom-made mobile application.

The Background

Since 2009, the French company Crosscall has been designing mobile phones known for their ruggedness and endurance. Its devices are suited to the most extreme environments, which make them an ideal choice for industrial uses and corporate fleets. Crosscall also makes a consumer line of products that outdoors and sports enthusiasts appreciate, no matter how demanding the conditions.

The Solution

The success of a software development project usually plays out in the start-up phase, before a single line of code is written. At that stage, Crosscall and Spiria teams joined forces to conduct an in-depth analysis. This was the time to evaluate all possible choices, to sketch the functions of a minimum viable product (MVP), and to draft a detailed road map. Because the deadline to get the app to market was tight, this preliminary work was all the more critical to reduce upstream any possible risks linked to software development. Spiria’s experts then familiarized the Crosscall team with the Agile development methodology and with essential tools such as Jira, which allowed for a sustained collaboration during the whole project. The goal was to build nothing less than the best video editing application ever seen on Android.

Development itself went without a hitch, in a classic sprint cycle. Several technological issues related to video and audio provided an opportunity to devise elegant and efficient solutions. In the end, the MVP was launched on the date agreed upon three months prior.

The Results

The new application, X-Story, hit the market on time and budget, with hundreds of thousands of people using it daily. The experience is easy, seamless and intuitive for those fortunate owners of Crosscall phones, who can create movies without needing to load videos to a computer.

Given its success, Crosscall decided to pre-install X-Story on all models, including the line of Core products for professionals. The company is currently thinking about how to add features to further improve the user experience and to make it even more “magical.”

Spiria’s support helped ensure that the X-Story project was one of the most successful projects in terms of cost, deadline and quality.
