Apple’s contribution to renewable-energy projects has precluded its subcontractors from emitting 13.9 million metric-tons of CO2 in the atmosphere. This is equivalent to taking 3 million cars off the road for a year, according to the company. The initiative is part of Apple’s efforts to slow climate change by becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Unlike companies who only promise to eliminate pollution directly linked to operations, Apple’s pledge to mitigating climate change takes a bigger bite by reducing emissions upstream by its suppliers and downstream by customers using its products. Not only a bigger bite but one that chomps to the core, since indirect emissions make up most of its carbon footprint. What’s more, Apple explains that to help along development in small communities, it financially supports solar-panel projects in countries such as Colombia, the Philippines, South Africa, Israel, Niger, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Ars Technica, Justine Calma, “Apple successfully pushes suppliers to use more renewable energy.”
