Tesla’s controversial Full Self-Driving feature has suffered yet another setback. The car manufacturer had to recall nearly 12,000 vehicles when a software update introduced a bug that prevents the neural networks on one of the chips from functioning consistently. This problem led to false activations of the frontal collision warning system and, worse, the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system. After receiving numerous malfunction reports, Tesla halted the rollout of the update and recalled 11,706 affected vehicles, mostly Models S, X and 3 built between 2017 and 2021 and Model Y vehicles built between 2020 and 2021 that run firmware version 2021.36.5.2. The timing couldn’t be worse for Tesla, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the US federal agency responsible for road safety, is looking into the autopilot function that has been implicated in several accidents that injured 17 people and killed one.
