TiMi Studio Group, a subsidiary of Chinese giant Tencent, is behind several major titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Honor of Kings and the upcoming Pokémon UNITE. On Monday, the Shenzhen-based company announced the opening of a new game development studio in Montreal. TiMi Montreal will join the TiMi group in North America, alongside studios in Los Angeles and Seattle. The Montreal team will be tasked with creating an open-world AAA video game that players can explore on multiple platforms. TiMi Montreal intends to build a large team by the end of the year.
Furthermore, Tencent announced plans to buy British video game company Sumo Group for US$ 1.27 billion. The Chinese tech company already has an 8.75% stake in the developer, according to Gamesindustry.biz, and the offer represents a 43% premium over Sumo’s current valuation. Based in Sheffield, England, Sumo’s main studio works for the biggest names in the industry. It developed the Sony PlayStation 5 launch title, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and was the main studio on Microsoft’s Crackdown 3 for Xbox consoles and PCs.
