To get the upcoming self-driving feature installed on your Tesla (Full Self-Driving Mode, FSD, currently in beta testing with a limited number of users), it’ll set you back 10,000 USD. Not in the budget? Take comfort: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, decided that the feature will also be available as a monthly subscription. The cost of this subscription was not disclosed, but fans are hoping around 100 USD per month. Subscription models are not new to Tesla. In 2020, the company began charging 10 USD per month for the “Premium Connectivity” package, providing access to traffic information, games, music streaming and other services, in addition to base and navigation tools, which remain free.

Other automakers are starting to offer subscription options. GM will offer its hands-free driving aid called Super Cruise, already installed in the Cadillac Escalade, CT5 and CT4 sedans, free of charge for the first three years, after which a subscription will be required. Nissan also sells subscription service packs. In an era where automobiles increasingly feature digital and connected services, the trend is expected to spread to all car models. As with other digital services, the option is generally free for a trial period, but drivers must then subscribe to continue to enjoy the driving and entertainment features.

Mashable, Sasha Lekach, “Tesla and other carmakers want you to pay monthly for feature subscriptions.”
