According to IDC’s Q4 2021 sales tracker on mobile phones, 48.1% of all Android phones in the US were equipped with MediaTek chips, compared to Qualcomm’s 43.9%, as spotted by PCMag. These numbers are a dramatic shift from the previous quarter, when MediaTek had 41% of market share while Qualcomm held onto 56%. IDC’s report shows that MediaTek’s gain is driven by sales of the Galaxy A12, Galaxy A32 and Moto G Pure, which make up 51% of MediaTek devices sold in the fourth quarter and 24% of the entire Android market in the US.
MediaTek is not a household name like Qualcomm when it comes to phone processors, but the company has consistently become more visible in the US and beyond with low- and mid-range devices such as the LG Velvet or the Moto G Pure.
