Micron Technology, a key player in RAM and SSD best known for its Crucial subsidiary, has pledged up to 100 billion USD to build a chip manufacturing plant near Syracuse, New York. The company says that this will be the “largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the United States.” This decision results from the CHIPS federal program that allocates 52 billion USD in funding to encourage chip manufacturers to build production sites on US soil. According to the New York Times, the new plant will take up a 1,300-acre site in Clay, New York, just north of Syracuse. It will create around 9,000 jobs over the next twenty years, not counting the many construction and supply-chain jobs. Micron plans to start building in 2024 and go into production in 2025 with 3,000 employees. Last month, Micron also announced that it intended to build a 15 billion USD semiconductor plant in Idaho. “There is no doubt that without the CHIPS act, we would not be here today,” said Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra in a press release.

The Verge, Emma Roth, “Micron’s investing up to $100 billion to bring the country’s ‘largest semiconductor’ facility to New York.”
