Combining several metrics from different sources to estimate the relative popularity of different languages, IEEE Spectrum released its ninth annual ranking of the best programming languages. Python remains in the lead, closely followed by C. However, the combined popularity of C and similar major languages (C++ and C#) far exceeds Python. Java also remains popular, as does JavaScript, which is supported by the increasing complexity of web sites and applications. SQL is the most, but not the only, sought-after technology in job postings; employers want a language + SQL. In-demand languages with recruiters also include TypeScript, Scale, Ruby and Go, but to a much lesser extent than Python, Java, JavaScript, C, C# and C++.
