The more iPhones change, the more they stay the same… You won’t discern any radical change or breakthrough technology in these new Apple iPhone, Mini, Pro, and Pro Max 13 versions. More power, more battery life, a few enhancements and improvements sprinkled about, is pretty much what you can expect from this 2021 crop.

Like last year, the entry-level iPhone 13 comes in two versions: the “regular” 6.1-inch model and the 5.4-inch Mini. The screen is an OLED panel that Apple says is brighter. The Face ID notch is slightly reduced, but whatever. The new A15 Bionic Processor is of course faster and more power-efficient than last year’s A14 Bionic chip, gaining the iPhone 13 Mini 1.5 hours of battery life compared to the iPhone 12 Mini, while the iPhone 13 sees its battery life increased by 2.5 hours over the iPhone 12, thanks to bigger batteries. The cameras’ quality has improved with innovations that emerged with the 12 Pro Max. Apple also introduced a new video “cinematic mode,” which lets you change focus while recording. Prices start at CAD 1,099 for the iPhone 13 and CAD 949 for the iPhone 13 Mini. Storage options for this year’s models have been scaled up, with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations on both models.

Both the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max feature the A15 Bionic chip, and their Super Retina XDR displays, which are the same size as before (6.1- and 6.7-inches), support variable refresh rates between 10Hz and 120Hz. As with the less expensive models, the cameras come with their fair share of upgrades, among them the ability to shoot in 4K/30fps (provided you have at least 512GB and RAM). Battery life has increased by 1.5 hours for the 13 Pro and 2.5 hours for the Pro Max. Prices start at CAD 1,399 for the iPhone 13 Pro and CAD 1,549 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here too, the storage options have been increased with configurations of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB (a first for Apple) for both models.

Pre-order on all models starts Friday September 17, and they will be available as of September 24.
