Inside the new Mac Studio

The iFixit crew got their hands on the new Mac Studio computer as well as Apple’s Studio Display and wasted no time doing what it does: taking it apart piece by piece to get to the bottom of things, and know how easy (or hard) it is to repair or even upgrade it. As with any Apple device, you can’t expect a glowing iFixit repairability score, but the Mac Studio did alright with an honorable mention of 6 out of 10. iFixit allows that you can replace the Mac Studio SSD with another similarly sized SSD if the hard drive were to fail. But despite the presence of a slot for a second SSD, it doesn’t look easy to add an additional drive to upgrade the Studio’s storage. The reason for this second port remains a mystery to this day. The good news is that most elements are held together with screws, and the computer ports are modular and should be relatively easy to replace if they break.

iFixit also took the opportunity to tear down the new Studio Display which, according to them, “opens like an iMac, and inside looks… a lot like an iMac.” However, they’ve not gotten around to giving it a repairability score. More to come…
