Edge officially launches on Linux

November 2, 2021.

Microsoft Edge for Linux.

Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu.

No further proof of Microsoft’s crush on Linux was needed, but we’ll give it to you anyway: one year after the Preview version was released, the Windows browser officially alights on Linux with the first “stable” version available for download. From the start, Microsoft primarily intended Edge on Linux for developers who want to test websites and web applications rather than as a browser for the general public. But in practice, it works so well that anyone can use it and it’s an interesting alternative to Firefox and Chrome. The browser supports a wide variety of distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and openSUSE.

If you already use the beta of Edge on Linux, you can get the latest stable version by running the command sudo apt install microsoft-edge-stable. If you are using Edge on Linux for the first time, install software (.deb et .rpm) is available from Microsoft’s website.
