The 2022 edition of E3, the world’s most Exciting and Eagerly-awaited Electronic Entertainment Expo (all out of E superlatives), has been cancelled, both physically and virtually. This is the second time in three years that Entertainment Software Association (ESA) won’t produce its videogame trade show. It was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. It was back on last year, but in digital form only. Since the beginning of this year, rumors had been swirling that E3 wouldn’t take place at all. The official confirmation came today.
“We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022,” the ESA said today. “Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.” Kotaku’s Ari Notis points to the trend of E3’s declining relevance, as publishers opt for one-off events that take place throughout the year rather than a single week of media hype. Besides, key players like Sony haven’t attended in years.
