With the beta launch of its API (Application Programming Interface), OpenAI is making DALL-E, its image generating software, more widely available to app developers so they can easily add text-to-image functionality to their software solutions. A first use case for this API is Microsoft’s recent release of the Designer app (Microsoft being a main investor in OpenAI), which uses the popular machine learning model to generate visuals that top up the software’s image bank. Access to DALL-E’s API will be limited at first, until OpenAI has tested the system. Customers are billed per image and can choose between three resolutions: 256 x 256 ppi will cost 0.016 USD per unit, 512 x 512 will cost 0.018 USD and 1024 x 1024 will cost 0.02 USD.
